Pinnacle ShowCenter 250HD media receiver

There are ton of ways to stream media from your PC to your TV, but Pinnacle is hoping that you will choose their ShowCenter 250HD to do the job. It has a lot going for it, both wired and wireless (b/g) connectivity and support for a range of formats.

The formats that the ShowCenter can handle include:

MP3, WMA, WMA Pro, WMA lossless, WMA-DRM, PCM WAV uncompressed, Windows Media Video 9, WMV-DRM, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVI, DivX, XviD files, as well as high-defenition WMV 9, DivX HD and MPEG-4.

Where I believe that this product goes wrong is with the failure to include FLAC support. FLAC is fast becoming the lossless format of choice for music buffs. The other thing that was noticeably absent was an HDMI port. HDMI would have unquestionably raised the price a little bit, but for the performance advantages that it offers, one would think it to be a nice inclusion.

che dire? sono accessibili da pc come fossero hard disk esterni? hanno la connessione usb, però chissà collegandoci un pc come si comportano.

La rete elettrica come rete Ethernet?

Su Engadget ho trovato questo:
Sharp's HN-VA40S HomePlug AV 4-port Ethernet HUB.
Creare una rete Ethernet utilizzando i cavi elettrici, mica male? Anche la Marantz ha qualche "apparecchio" che sfrutta qualcosa di simile per fare streaming audio.

Roku SoundBridge M1000/M1001 (Pinnacle)

Carino questo mediaplayer, sembra che sia compatibile con un server UPnP.
Dal filmato di Cnet sembra un po' un giocattolino, però fa un'impressione migliore di altri.

UPnP client: Geexbox

Geexbox (oltre a tutto il resto) può trasformare un pc in un mediaclient (mediaplayer) compatibile UPnP. Per farlo usa djmount, che "monta" tutti i contenuti di tutte le periferiche mediaserver che trova nella rete, facendoli vedere come se facessero parte del filesystem linux, nella directory /mnt/UPnP.

Geexbox può essere poi anche mediaserver compatibile UPnP, e per far questo utilizza uShare.

update: anche xbmc (Xbox media center) è sia un mediaserver che un mediaplayer compatibile UPnP

Su YouTube ho trovato questo filmato: non sarebbe male avere un mediacenter che, grazie ad un piccolo schermo lcd, non ha bisogno di uno schermo TV.

Fallito: pc per FreeNas

Ieri ho scaricato la iso di FreeNas, l'ho masterizzata in un nuovo cd e l'ho provata nel mio pc per vedere se si avviava. Tutto ok.
Poi ho preso il mio vecchio pc, un PII 350Mhz, c'ho messo una scheda di rete Realtek 8139, ed ho provato ad installarci FreeNas.
Purtroppo il pc non è nemmeno partito. Ho smontato tutto cercando di escludere pezzo a pezzo le varie cause. Alla fine mi sembra proprio che il pezzo rotto sia la scheda madre, una vecchia ASUS P2B.

Adesso mi devo procurare un vecchio pc per provare FreeNas, strada in salita!

Mediatomb

Come dice il sito: "MediaTomb is an open source (GPL) UPnP MediaServer with a nice web user interface, it allows you to stream your digital media through your home network and listen to/watch it on a variety of UPnP compatible devices.

MediaTomb implements the UPnP MediaServer V 1.0 specification that can be found on http://www.upnp.org/. The current implementation focuses on parts that are required by the specification, however we look into extending the functionality to cover the optional parts of the spec as well."

Mediatomb è solo per Linux, FreeBSD e MacOS X.

UShare

Come dice il sito: "uShare is a UPnP (TM) A/V Media Server. It implements the server component that provides UPnP media devices with information on available multimedia files. uShare uses the built-in http server of libupnp to stream the files to clients."

FreeNAS

Come dice il sito: "FreeNAS è un server NAS libero, che supporta i protocolli CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, AFP, RSYNC, iSCSI, S.M.A.R.T., l'autenticazione di utenti locali, Software RAID (0,1,5). La sua interfaccia di configurazione è completamente WEB. FreeNAS occupa meno di 32MB dopo l'installazione su Compact Flash, hard disk o chiavetta USB.
La mini-distribuzione FreeBSD (grazie alla quale FreeNAS funziona), l'interfaccia Web, gli scripts PHP e la documentazione sono basati su M0n0wall."

Aggiungo che FreeNas sembra implementare Ushare, cioè un mediaserver compatibile con lo standard UPnP. Che vogliamo di più?

Prenderò il mio vecchio pc (PII - 350Mhz) e lo proverò.

Idea di base

L'idea di base è avere un posto unico, accessibile un po' da tutto e da tutti, in cui si trovano tutti i file che desidero condividere.

Poi, avere un po' di periferiche che, diciamo, leggano/scrivano/estraggano ecc, file da questo "deposito".

Potrebbe quindi funzionare con un NAS (che però consumi pochissimo, sia affidabile, sia facile da amministrare, velocissimo nell'avviarsi, economico, ecc).

Da questo Nas deve essere possibile:
- accedere in lettura/scrittura da un'altro pc collegato, come se fosse un disco esterno;
- accedere "in streaming" da altre periferiche audio/video presenti in casa (per far questo occorre che il NAS includa un Mediaserver compatibile con lo standard UPnP).

UPnP - Universal Plug and Play

Sembra proprio che tutte qualunque periferica (hardware e/o software) sia coinvolta nella rete domestica debba essere conforme allo standard UPnP, almeno per quanto riguarda la condivisione/fruizione di musica e video.

Purtroppo però non tutte le periferiche adottano lo standard allo stesso modo (dovrei dire non tutti implementano pienamente lo standard).

a cosa serve?

Media server, mediastream, mediacenter, mediaclient ecc..... bo! a me serve sapere solo se riesco ad avere file (musica, video, ecc) condivisi tra le stanze del mio piccolo appartamento.
Questo blog serve per conservare tutti i miei appunti, tentativi, ecc...
